Keihin Tohoku Line (京浜東北線) arrives at Shinbashi Station (新橋駅)

Looking at the new Yodobashi Camera building from the platform at Akihabara Station (秋葉原駅).  I heard some of the restaurants inside are open 24 hours!

I was surprised at the new Chuo Line (中央線) train cars. They’ve installed LCD monitors that tell you all the stations up ahead, time required to reach the station and other useful info.

Catching the “last train” is quite a phenomenon in Japan. The Japanese will do whatever it takes to make it on that very last train that’ll take them home after a night of drinking. Here we were at the office town of Kayabacho (茅場町駅) trying to catch the last Tozai Line (東西線) express train.

It was pretty crowded, but I had been in worse trains. At least I was able to move my hands and wasn’t accused of being a “chikan” (痴漢) or a train groper!

A funny poster I saw in the station. In recent years there are more young women blatantly applying their makeup while riding the train, which is considered bad manner in Japan. Personally I wouldn’t mind watching some cute girl putting on her makeup (it can be kinda hot), but unfortunately in most cases the offenders are rather unattractive. I guess the pretty ones know better…

Some undoubtedly startled person took these pictures at a children’s expo in Japan. What began as innocent supersized replicas of the popular Pokemon character Pikachu for the kids to climb into and jump around has gone terribly wrong! I mean, didn’t anybody notice the placement of the entrance / exit when these blown up Pikachus were made? And apparently the Japanese parents didn’t seem to be bothered by the obvious orifice on Pikachu as the children kept on playing.

Wait a minute, is that what I think it is? I thought Pikachu is a boy?

It’s like the kids are giving Pikachu a pelvic exam!

That is just wrong! Couldn’t they have placed the opening off to the side or even in the back?

Since we’re in Japan we should abide by Japanese law. And the law here says display of genital is prohibited so let’s bring out the good old mosaic…

Ahh, those wacky Japanese famous for pulling off some of the most outrageous things have once again outdone themselves. The fellas from the small fishing town of Susami-cho (すさみ町) in Wakayama Prefecture that faces the Pacific Ocean in western Japan (just south of Osaka) probably smoked a little something-something before they went out and set up a mail box in…under the sea!

The odd location of the mail box also ensured the people of Susami a Guinness Book of World Record for the deepest spot on earth for a mail box. The functional (believe it or not…my Japanese pals just crack me up!) unit is located about 100 meters from the harbor and 14 meters under the water. The tall old school mail box painted in firetruck red weighs about 80 kilograms and was first put in place back in 1999. Local scuba diving shop Noa Susami handles the mail pick up.

According to the shop manage Kazuyuki Suzuki the mail box has received over 30,000 pieces of mail! You’ve gotta admit Japanese people got a sense of humor. And oh yeah, the town is also famous for bonito tuna and yellowtail amberjack.

This catchy eurobeat has caught on like wildfire in Japan since the latter part of 2007 and the origin of the simple yet cute dance moves can be traced back to the characters from the Japanese PC game (later turned anime) “Popotan”.

The Caramelldansen / uma uma dance has the person sway his / her hip from side to side while having the hands flap around over the head to simulate rabbit ears. Only in Japan can they come up with cutesy stuff like that! :)

The unpopular mascot was chosen out of 21 different sketches back on the 12th of this month and still remains unnamed. The majority of responses from the public has been “creepy”, “disrespectful to Buddhism”, “unnatural”, “defames the Nara name” and of course the expected “not cute“.

Kazuhiro Watanabe, 33, from Okagaki, Fukuoka Prefecture, admitted to the allegations of theft during questioning. “I got excited when I smelled them and fantasized over what the women who wore them looked like,” Watanabe was quoted as telling investigators.

In the specific case for which he was arrested, Watanabe stole a pair of boots belonging to a 42-year-old woman, worth 5,000 yen, from a sports club in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu, on Feb. 22, local police said.

Investigators confiscated 27 pairs of women’s boots from his home and car. Local police said they suspect that he stole the boots from hospitals and gyms while on his way home from work over the past few years.

And the small fishing town of 32,000 in western Japan has found their calling…to rally behind Barack Obama while selling all kinds of related souvenirs from t-shirts to chopsticks to cellphone straps.

Kirin’s popular Ichiban Shibori Stout

You never know what’s going to come out of that wacky place called Japan. Recently the beer meisters at Kirin Brewery brewed up the idea of having a hot mug of beer during the cold winter season.

How’s this for a winter treat?

Kirin’s latest concoction is based on their Ichiban Shibori Stout dark beer and is currently being test marketed in house at their main brewery in Yokohama. Kirin suggests serving the beverage at 50 degree Celsius (about 122 degree Fahrenheit) with a cinnamon stick and brown sugar cubes on the side. When you’re ready to drink you should stir the beer to give it a frothy head like cappuccino, which brings out its flavorful aroma.

According to Kirin they chose the Ichiban Shibori Stout series because this premium dark beer is made with carefully selected blend of caramel and roasted barley, then twice filtered. The result is an irresistible and luxurious deep aroma that’s further accentuated by the heating process.

Kirin also mentioned about serving the heated stout over vanilla ice cream…hot stout beer float anyone?
